When entering Indonesia, you must comply with the current entry regulations. We inform you about the necessary documents, the requirements for entry as well as the customs and import regulations.
For your entry into Indonesia, you will need to present some documents to the border officials. These include:
To enter Indonesia, you need a passport that is valid for at least six months. Entry with a temporary passport or a child's passport is only possible with a valid visa (not with a VoA or e-VoA).
To get to Indonesia, you need either a visa or a so-called Visa on Arrival.
The Visa on Arrival (VoA), as the name suggests, does not have to be applied for before departure but can only be applied for upon entry into Indonesia. Since November 2022, you also have the option to apply for an electronic e-VoA online before you travel.
A VoA or e-VoA is available for travelers from a total of 87 countries and allows a single entry for a maximum of 30 days for tourist purposes, business appointments, or transit at an Indonesian airport. The Visa on Arrival can be extended once for another 30 days and costs 500,000 Indonesian Rupiah (approx. € 30).
For longer stays in Indonesia, you need to apply for a visa for Indonesia that corresponds to the purpose of your trip. This can be, for example, a work visa or a second-home visa (e.g., for investors, students, or retirees).
For entry into Indonesia, travel vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis are recommended.
You are allowed to enter Indonesia if you meet the necessary requirements. The following criteria have an influence on the entry permit at the border:
In order for your trip to Indonesia to go as smoothly as possible, you should take care of a few organizational things in advance.
For entry into Indonesia, no proof of travel insurance coverage is required. However, we strongly recommend you take care of appropriate insurance coverage. Otherwise you will have to bear the costs of medical treatment by yourself.
Paying with established credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, or American Express is usually no problem in the more densely populated or tourist regions of Indonesia. Therefore, when choosing your travel credit card, make sure that you can withdraw cash worldwide at the lowest possible fees or even free of charge. For trips to less developed areas, it is advisable to always carry enough cash.
If you want to drive a car or motorcycle in Indonesia, you will need an international driver's license, which is only valid in combination with your national driver's license. Also, keep in mind that Indonesia has left-hand traffic before you decide to rent a vehicle.
When you enter Indonesia, you must fill out the customs declaration. If you are traveling to Jakarta or Bali, you can use an electronic customs form from the Indonesian authorities as early as two days before your arrival, thus reducing possible waiting times at the airport.
By and large, customs regulations in Indonesia are not very strict. If you are carrying cash or valuables, you do not have to declare them until they reach a value of 100 million Indonesian Rupiah (about € 6,000).
However, special care must be taken with medications, as Indonesia has very strict anti-drug legislation. If you require narcotic medication or psychotropic drugs, you must transport them in their original packaging and carry a medical certificate translated into English or Indonesian.
When buying souvenirs, make sure that you do not purchase any products that violate the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
